Ah, Eurovision. The stuff of cheesy Europop and freaky woman dangling from ceilings in giant see-through paddling pools. You can't make it up :)
This year it was held in Russia, and I have to say, while a lot of the songs were some fairly boring ballads, countries like Greece and Ukraine really made up for it in their performances. Also, both countries were ROBBED. I have to say I'm a little gutted there was nothing as awesome as Kalomira's performance from last year (giant books, anyone?), but Ukraine's entry is really starting to grow on me.
The videos for my favourite acts are below, including the slightly puzzling "postcard" introductions. This year, it was a model looking at famous buildings from the country, then wearing them as a hat. We also learned some
useful Russian words. I now know how to say "let's rock," "caviar," "Santa Claus," and "grandmother."
Grece's entry (Sakis Rouvas' "This Is Our Night") was OK GO's music videos meet Europop meets over-enthusiasm. It was fantastic though, crazy dancing guy on a giant glittery treadmill coffee table which opens up with a Greek flag inside. Note the slightly scary "unnh"s before the chorus for added amusement.
The Ukraine's entry of Svetlana Loboda's "Be My Valentine! (Anti-Crisis Girl)" was also so awesome. I loved the song and the overall performance; the naked Brit awards/Roman soldiers were a little odd, but the rotating cog things, if a little odd, were brilliant. You can check out the music video
here; it's kind of like a Magnum ad gone wrong.. there's bizarre costumes, writhing/being baked in chocolate and lots of wind machine. Also, anyone else thinking the chorus of this sounds like it belongs in a Citroën ad?
